Kindergarten

  • Read with your child every day.
  • Read your child's favorite book over and over.
  • Read stories with rhyming words.

Grade 1

  • Talk often with your child.
  • Read to and with your child often.
  • Talk about words and ideas in books.
  • Play word games.

Grade 2

  • Find ways to read, write, and tell stories with your child.
  • Take turns adding to a story the two of you make up.
  • Have your child retell the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
  • Make a book together. Have your child write sentences and illustrate a picture about the book.

Grade 3    

  • Encourage your child to read daily.
  • Introduce him/her to a series of books or a favorite author.
  • Retell the plot, discuss characters, and events from the story.
  • Discuss every day activities to build your child's background knowledge.

Grade 4

  • Read aloud to your child.
  • Have your son/daughter discuss vocabulary.
  • Read schedules, recipes and instructions.

Grade 5

  • Make reading a part of your child's every day life.
  • Respond and give insight to what is read.
  • Share favorite books and authors.
  • Read fiction and nonfiction stories.
