Managing Seasonal Allergies in Children
As we enter peak allergy season, many children may begin experiencing symptoms related to environmental allergens such as pollen, grass, and mold. These allergies can affect a child’s comfort, concentration, and overall well-being during the day. We’d like to share some helpful information so you can recognize symptoms early and support your child effectively.
Common Symptoms of Seasonal Allergies:
Children with seasonal allergies may experience one or more of the following:
-
Frequent sneezing
-
Runny or congested nose
-
Itchy nose, throat, or ears
-
Red, watery, or itchy eyes
-
Postnasal drip (mucus running down the back of the throat)
-
Coughing, especially at night
-
Fatigue or irritability due to disrupted sleep
-
Dark circles under the eyes (“allergic shiners”)
These symptoms can sometimes be mistaken for a cold, but allergies typically last longer and do not cause fever.
Strategies to Help Manage Symptoms:
-
Monitor pollen levels: On high pollen days, limit outdoor activities when possible, especially in the early morning.
-
Keep windows closed: Use air conditioning at home and in the car to reduce exposure to outdoor allergens.
-
Encourage hand and face washing: This helps remove pollen after outdoor play.
-
Change clothes after being outside: This reduces the spread of allergens indoors.
-
Use prescribed or over-the-counter medications: Antihistamines or other allergy medications may be helpful—please consult your child’s healthcare provider.
-
Maintain a clean indoor environment: Regular vacuuming and dusting can minimize indoor allergens.
-
Stay hydrated: Drinking fluids can help thin mucus and ease congestion.
If your child has severe symptoms or difficulty breathing, please seek medical attention promptly.
We appreciate your support in helping children stay healthy and comfortable during allergy season. If your child requires medication during the day, please ensure proper documentation and communication with the Health Office.
